The Rev. Dr. Beth Kelly
Begin with 18 years on the backs of horses, forever a student diving inside books from science to history, and surrendering to playing every musical instrument I could get my hands on. Idaho desert life offered mystical experiences that drove me to the Episcopal Church where I was baptized in 1978. From there the Spirit sent me to San Francisco where I found dancing and chanting in liturgy at St Gregory Nyssen an extraordinary experience of home. Completing seminary at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1987, I began serving in parishes. In teaching, preaching, writing, composing — my approach to serving Christ has been one of offering creative gifts to heal, proclaim, and serve. In 2014, I completed a D.Min. that explored the relationship between what goes on in our brains with music and ritual. Congregational singing is very important to me. I am enjoying serving on the board for Music that Makes Community.
In 2011 I arrived at St Andrew’s in a suburban context wholly unfamiliar from my large church city ministry. Together, we have reached further into serving our community. Now on our campus we can offer adoption services, preschool education, ways and means for feeding the hungry, host a comprehensive organization for homeless services, and continue with our contemplative prayer community and our intercessory prayer groups to provide foundation for our social justice and care for one another.
On my days off you will find me in my studio painting and drawing, preparing for my next art exhibit. My three doodles – Cooper, Gus, and Ellie – offer ample demand to hike.
