FILLING A NEED There is a significant and growing need for nutritious food for the poor in Orange County.
Who has the most need of this food? Our children.
We, the congregation of St Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Fullerton, will expand our mission in response to the nutrition and hunger issues among the poor in our community. We join the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles in their Seeds of Hope initiative.
Our answer: to turn 11,700 square feet of our front lawn into an urban garden. We are going to grow boatloads of food – yes, boats. Instead of the typical raised beds, will have 50 boats loaded with plantings and harvest of nutritionally dense fruits and vegetables. Johnathan Duffy Davis (biologist and farmer ) consults with us on the plantings. All of the food harvested goes to three local food banks that feed 1,400 people each week. Being on the busiest street in Fullerton, CA, we have made a big splash, other groups are joining in to help feed the growing numbers of impoverished families. This is our Seeds of Hope garden.
The garden has been designed by a prominent LA landscape architect, Mark Rios, of Rios Clementi Hale Studios. He has donated all of his services to this project. The design will render a beautiful park like setting. We have commitments from the community to help with the garden — especially Cal State Fullerton, Fullerton College and local high schools. This will be a community effort. Our plans don’t just stop there. We want to nourish the community in other ways as well – especially educationally. We anticipate classes on gardening and maximizing nutrition in cooking.
This project will rely heavily on the work of volunteers from local college groups to community members and service groups, in addition to our own congregation members. If you wish to join us, either with helping hands or a donation, please contact the Seeds of Hope chairpersons, Sheila Lowerre and Chuck Knight. Their contact information is available through the church office – 714.870.4350. We are also available to make presentations to your group if you’d like to get involved with this project.
